Become a companion

Spend meaningful time, get paid, with clear boundaries and no care responsibilities

GoodCompany companions are paid visitors who spend regular, in-person time with older adults who live independently.

Visits are intergenerational by design, bringing younger adults (typically aged 18–32) and older people together through conversation, shared interests, and simple social routines.

This is not a care role.

Please read role description below carefully.

What companionship involves

Companions spend time socially with one or more older adults on a regular basis.

Visits might include:

  • Conversation and shared interests
  • Walks or sitting together
  • Games, reading, or quiet routines
  • Simply keeping someone company

Placements are matched intentionally so visits feel natural, not forced.

What companionship does not involve

This role does not include:

  • Personal or intimate care
  • Medical, mental health, or therapeutic support
  • Household tasks or errands
  • Handling money, banking, or valuables

If a placement moves outside the scope of companionship, it will be reviewed and may be paused or ended.

Time commitment

Visits are 2 hours by default, designed to feel settled and focused without becoming overwhelming.

Longer visits may be arranged only if both the family and companion agree in advance.

Reliability and consistency are essential.

How matching works

We match companions based on:

  • Interests and conversation style
  • Availability
  • Location

You may be matched with more than one family if availability and fit allow.

All placements are confirmed by us before visits begin.

We remain involved throughout placements to ensure visits stay appropriate and comfortable.

Requirements

To apply, you must:

  • Be aged 18–32
  • Be comfortable in an intergenerational social role
  • Be able to commit reliably to agreed visits
  • Be willing to complete identity verification and a DBS check once matched

Safeguarding and boundaries

Clear boundaries protect everyone involved.

Placements may be paused or ended if:

  • The scope of companionship is repeatedly exceeded
  • Commitments are not respected
  • Anyone feels uncomfortable continuing

We carry out check-ins and intervene where needed.
